How to read the plaque catalogue

Published surveys record 52 historical plaques: 48 extant and four lost. The online evidence currently supports 47 unique extant titles, so one inventory slot remains explicitly unidentified rather than inventing a name.

Murals catalogued by panel, figure and zone

Six seated-Buddha panels, twelve apsaras, six donors, doorway paintings and rear-screen zones each have an ID. Individual figures without a corresponding public high-resolution image remain marked as awaiting evidence.

CATALOGING PROTOCOL / Cataloguing method

An encyclopaedia is not about filling gaps;
it gives evidence a place.

01

One object, one ID

Plaques, mural figures and statues receive individual identifiers. When a group count is known but individual names are not, numbered inventory slots preserve that uncertainty.

02

Evidence levels

Verified, partly verified, pending and lost statuses expose the certainty of each record.

03

No false matches

Category references are labelled as such. A missing object image stays pending instead of being replaced by a similar picture.

04

Sources in context

Each record links to an original page or publication lead; images retain creator, platform and licence.
